We found Hyewon open, responsive, pleasant, and extraordinarily talented. She began work for the public awareness project in the winter of 2009 after her valuable experience at Process Studio Theatre Inc. in Manhattan, New York City. In all her work, she always goes a step further than is requested of her. At GP3, she took delight in seeing her designs influence people to rethink extreme poverty and produced many of our excellent design works. She was also our multimedia producer for motion graphics and films from 2010 to 2011. In summer 2011 she went to do a field research in the Namib Desert in southern Africa, which was a journey to brainstorm for better designs in the context of sustainable development. Holding a B.A. in Multimedia Design from Korea National University of Arts, Hyewon is also completing her M.A. in Design Management at International Design school for Advanced Studies (IDAS), Hongik University.

Jeong-ae is at the center of the cooperation and collaboration that are key to our design production process. She directs entire projects including designing the full set of materials for our public campaigns and redesigning povertyinfo.org. ‘Design for All, Design for Humanity’ is her motto. She is an energetic and supportive leader; she is the driving force behind the many hours of discussion and online collaboration among designers that go into every graphic. Without her commitment, we couldn’t have seen this fantastic website. While she is an excellent jewelry designer, she also has serious interest in the potential of social entrepreneurship. You may wonder what jewelry has to do with a nonprofit. The answer is simple: she will keep both sides of her life balanced. She firmly believes that one good graphic design can be far more influential than hundreds of research papers. She graduated from Dongduk Women’s University with a B.A. in Digital Craft.

As a Communication Design major at Hongik University, both his everyday life and academic work are inundated with commercial advertisements. But while staying in New York City, he got struck by numerous public ad campaigns in the streets of SoHo and Brooklyn. Impressed by the non-commercial possibilities of advertising, he began to search for a way to give his talent to serving the public interest. Now his professional design works consist of planning public awareness campaign, renewing new homepage and producing motion graphics. All public advertisements highly illustrate our message and effectively inform the reality of global poverty to people. He feels great pleasure in producing with other designers messages that arouse altruistic motivation. Although this involves great elaboration and stirring such interest in global poverty is a complicated task, he is optimistic. He believes his works will convey powerful messages even in the floods of commercial advertisements, so that many can stand against global poverty.

Ever since her first exposure to multivariate calculus, Kayoung had wanted to be a mathematician. She recalls the four years she spent engrossed in "the beautiful language of math" as an undergraduate student as some of her life’s happiest moments. Then in her junior year, backpacking through Southeast Asia gave her a real glimpse of extreme poverty for the first time. The experience led her to wonder if she could contribute her academic gift toward working against global poverty. That's how she found GP3, and we are so thankful that she did. Her eye for detail and brilliant ability for searching and categorizing (supposedly honed through poring over and constructing mathematical proofs) have boosted our quality of content production. Her hard work could also be seen in this new English website, which she initiated and set the framework for. She recently graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in Mathematical Sciences and Financial Engineering from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and is currently pursuing an MPhil degree in Economics at the University of Oxford. She loves yoga, vegetarian cooking, and sometimes, you could google her dancing at a flash mob event to end global poverty.

Jaewoo handles a wide range of web-based software and in charge of managing Povertywiki.Org, the Global Poverty Digital Library. He once wanted to be a writer producing socially influential stories. Now as a software system engineer he hopes to contribute his capabilities for something valuable rather than mere financial giving. He finds that the open platform for global poverty information, he currently manages, gives much more significant impacts beyond the possible influence from a sole writer in addressing global poverty. Our web-based social awareness campaign frequently encounters complicated difficulties from software coding. Thus his joining is an unexpected surprise for us. His responsible works made us amazed whenever he made breakthroughs solving technological stalemate. His specialty lies in using the C++ interface to create various programs. He is an amateur novelist writing on science fiction and action thriller.

Wonjoo’s inspiration comes from Han Bi-ya, an emergency relief expert who is known for her travel books and expertise in development. After asking himself about what could be the most valuable contribution for the poor, he decided to pour his energy into GP3. He believes that people living in less developed countries deserve a better quality of life. What he has learned is that compassionate actions for the people in need require organized tasks to be effective. His role at GP3 includes managing human resources and organizing and implementing our annual programs. Given his major Global Economics, he hopes to work in a think-tank run by the United Nations or one of the international financial institutions. His other passion is playing the bass.

Hyung Tak grew up with superhero comics dreaming to become a hero who changes the world into a better place, just like in the comics. His childhood idol? It was the Batman, whose starring role is to dismantle the criminal organizations that plague the city streets in the Dark Knight. Like the Batman, Hyung Tak is now a hero for us fighting against world poverty. He is responsible for managing the content production and checking for possible errors in both logic and grammar. He brings together the discrete contributions from individual volunteers to create a reliable source of knowledge for all, like the wikipedia. He says that being at the core of GP3’s knowledge production has given him a deeper understanding of poverty. If you ask him what third world debt is, he might give you one of his long speeches. He recalls the first moment he thought about poverty. He was poring over Karl Marx’s work with a bowl of ice cream, and he suddenly felt there was this inexplicable phenomenon in the world, named poverty. To him, it seemed like a sort of the irrationality that the world is involuntarily faced with. He wanted to redress this irrationality and that’s how he came to us. He was attracted by our approach that was distinct from other Korean organizations. He likes Marx, Chuang-tzu, and Richard Dawkins. He is studying Policy Science at Hanyang University and hopes to work at the UN Office of Legal affairs someday.

Duri was caught by words ‘design for humanity’ in a design theory class that currently links her volunteer work and professional commitment. One day, she got inspired by Victor Papanek’s tin-can radios which were used to bring important news and information to the poor in Indonesia. She is fond of some art works by Hans Hendriks like ‘Q drum’ in a wake of what she makes a commitment for underserved people. She became interested in design for all --not just for those who are well-off. She wants to help the public awareness project since it is a decisive factor in terms of giving new opportunities for those who suffered from the vicious circle of poverty and injustice in the world’s most destitute countries. She graduated from Konkook University with a B.A in Communication Design.

Jun Hye grew up in Romania, while communist political regimes in East Europe collapsed and the people were set free. During the period of transition to democracy, the country went through radical changes in many aspects. Having experienced that freedom of the press significantly stimulated democracy and brought people what they wanted, she learned something. When social agendas or problems gain considerable public attention, people are most likely to redress them working together forming social consensus. Jun Hye is an overseas fundraiser in GP3. Along with undertaking background researches on global poverty, she is in charge of writing proposals. She is happy to work with amiable people in the good team of GP3. She enjoys practicing yoga and participating in mock trials as well as nationwide debate rounds competition. Being motivated by her multicultural backgrounds, she is very passionate about advocating the rights of social minority groups. She pursues her studies majoring International Studies and Psychology at Ewha Womans University.
